La Alianza Hispana was begun in 1968 by Ana Maria Rodríguez, teacher of English as a second language at the Winthrop Elementary School in Dorchester, Massachusetts. Nelson Merced, a Latino politician and activist, was born in New York City in 1948. Merced first became politically active in Puerto Rico in the early 1970s, working with squatters in San Juan. He moved back to the United States to attend the University of Connecticut, graduating with a bachelor's degree in anthropology.
