Content Description

Michael L. Charney is a psychiatrist, political activist, and organizer in Boston, Massachusetts. In 1984, he worked with Northeastern University School of Law professor Richard Daynard to create the Tobacco Products Liability Project (TPLP), the legal division of the Tobacco Control Resource Center (TCRC). The TPLP provided legal research and analysis in support of municipalities undertaking tobacco control, testified at Congressional hearings, and provided conferences, workshops, and lectures. Founded in 1979, the TCRC provided tobacco control legal research, litigation support, and policy analysis for advocates and federal, state, and local officials. The papers consist of correspondence, leaflets, newspaper clippings, notes, publications, stickers, and VHS cassettes documenting Charney’s work with the TPLP and date from 1974 to 1997.
