The Phoenix Media/Communication Group published weekly alternative newspapers in the Boston area beginning in 1966 (The Phoenix, Boston Phoenix, Boston After Dark); in Providence, RI beginning in 1988 (Providence Phoenix); and in Portland, ME beginning in 1999 (Portland Phoenix). The Boston Phoenix was known for its music and entertainment coverage, which garnered classical music writer Lloyd Schwartz a Pulitzer Prize for criticism in 1994. The Phoenix Media/Communications Group also owned the alternative rock radio station WFNX, which was sold to Clear Channel in 2012. The Boston Phoenix published its final issue on March 15, 2013, and the final Providence Phoenix was published October 17, 2014.
