The collection documents the civil engineering career of Frederick P. Salvucci from approximately 1990 to 2012. Subject areas include public transit in Argentina and Puerto Rico, Massachusetts Port Authority, and the United States Department of Transportation. The collection is unprocessed. Frederick P. Salvucci was born in Boston in 1940. He graduated from Boston Latin High School in 1957 and earned both his Bachelor of Science (1961) and Master of Science (1962) studying civil engineering with a concentration in transportation from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Salvucci was a Fulbright scholar at the University of Naples from 1964-1965, where he studied the use of transportation investment to stimulate economic development.In 1970, Salvucci became the transportation advisor to Boston’s mayor Kevin White where he focused on improving public transportation. He was instrumental in stopping the construction of the Inner-Belt Highway and redirecting the money and land to the commuter rail system and the construction of the Southwest Corridor Park. Salvucci became the state secretary of transportation in 1975. As the secretary of transportation, Salvucci spearheaded the 1982 Central Artery/Tunnel Project, ("The Big Dig"). More recent activities have included participation in a restructuring of commuter and rapid transit services in Buenos Aires, Argentina, and an innovative research and educational collaboration with the University of Puerto Rico and the Puerto Rico Highway and Transportation Authority, focused on the development of a new transit system for San Juan, Puerto Rico from 1994-2004. The project, called Tren Urbano, is the first design-build-operate system in the United States. Accessioned 2016 Jul 20. 105/1-3 Process with Z17-002 and Z17-009.
