Biographical / Historical
Nancy Walker (March 17, 1935 - May 20, 1996) was a writer and a gay rights activist. Born in New York City to Renee and Martin Fried, she grew up in Long Island, New York, where she attended Wellington C. Mepham High School in Bellmore. She completed her undergraduate studies at Hofstra College, majoring in English and graduating cum laude in 1956. While there, she was involved with the school’s literary magazine, The Word, and Hillel, a Jewish students group. She is listed as The Word’s circulation editor in 1953, and as poetry editor in 1954-1956.
Nancy married Geoff Walker while in college, but they separated several years later. In the early 1960s, Walker met her life partner, who she called her “sother” (significant other). In the early 1970s, while living in Toronto, Canada, they were involved with the Community Homophile Association of Toronto (CHAT), a newly formed LGBTQA organization that organized social events, advocated for gay rights, and offered services such as counselling and legal assistance. Walker served in a few different roles at CHAT, including Vice President and Director of Social Services.
In 1975, Walker and her partner moved to Boston. In 1976, Walker began working for the Gay Community News (GCN), a weekly gay liberation newspaper. She wrote general features and reviews of books, theater, and film, carried out interviews, and did copy editing. She also wrote a column titled “Odyssey of a Unicorn” and managed the classifieds section, where she (Porcupine) posted love poems to her partner (Mousie Mousie Wildflower). During this time she also published poems in Focus: A Journal for Gay Women.
In order to supplement her writing and editorial income, Walker took the civil service exam in 1979, and began working as an administrative assistant for the Boston Public Schools Student Services.
After leaving GCN in 1984, Walker continued writing “Odyssey of a Unicorn” for Bay Windows, another New England LGBTQA newspaper, until 1985.
In 1992, Walker and her partner became involved with She, a newspaper for professional women in New England conceived of by Elaine Noble and Michele Piccolo. She served as its associate editor, and wrote features and the “Odyssey of a Unicorn” column.
Walker was first diagnosed and treated for breast cancer in the 1970s. After several recurrences, she died of the disease at the age of 61.

Processing Information
Original folders were replaced with acid-free folders, and Walker's original folder titles, when present, were transcribed onto them. Some original folder titles may have been written by her partner. Any titles in brackets were devised by the processing archivists, with the exception of Series 5, where all titles were devised by the processing archivists (and most often taken from the items themselves).
Photographs, negatives and slides were sleeved in archival photo sleeves. Notes identifying some of the photographs were written by Walker's partner, and are preserved alongside the photographs.
Walker's papers contained sequences of loose writings, notes and correspondence, and similar sequences of material in untitled folders. These sequences were foldered (or refoldered), collated and loosely arranged chronologically, but otherwise left as is. They are found in Series 4 [Notes, Coursework and Writings] (6 folders) and Series 9 [Notes, Poems and Writings] (8 folders).
