Historical Note
The national Women Against Violence Against Women was founded in Los Angeles in 1976. The Boston chapter was started a year later by Marcia Womongold, an anti-pornography activist. Boston Women Against Violence Against Women formed in response to a billboard advertisement for the album "Black and Blue" by the Rolling Stones, which showed a woman bound, cut, and bruised, and apparently not unhappy about it. In 1978 Women Against Violence Against Women became affiliated with the Women's Center in Cambridge, Massachusetts where it held its regular meetings.
Women Against Violence Against Women protested violence against women primarily in the film and recording industries. The group participated in numerous direct actions, including boycotting Warner, Elektra and Atlantic recording companies; producing a slide show about violence against women in the recording industry; picketing demeaning store displays at Jordan Marsh, Camel's Hump, and a Quincy Market leather store; protesting offensive films, including, "Cruising", "Windows" and "Dressed to Kill;" and spray painting derogatory billboards and store front displays. The group disbanded in 1984.
