The Somerville Women's Educational Center (SWC) was founded in 1976 and incorporated the following year. It emerged from an idea of the planning group of the Somerville Women's Fair, and in the fall of 1976, 40 women met to form committees to organize the Center. The Women's Coffeehouse began in October 1979 when a small group of women from the Women's Educational Center in Cambridge, Massachusetts met to discuss plans to open a Coffeehouse operated by and for women.
