School of Commerce and Finance records
Collection
Identifier: A041
Overview
In 1896 the Evening Institute of the Boston YMCA was established to provide night classes for men working during the day. Courses in business and finance were offered beginning in 1907, and in 1910 the School of Commerce and Finance of the Boston YMCA was officially incorporated. In the following year, the school was accorded degree-granting privileges. In 1916 Northeastern College was created to oversee the activities of the many separate schools. Thereafter, the business department of the Evening Institute of the YMCA was incorporated and changed its name to Northeastern College, School of Commerce and Finance of the Boston YMCA. The year 1922 saw two changes: the School became co-educational, and Northeastern College became Northeastern University. In 1928 the School of Commerce and Finance was renamed the School of Business, and in 1960 the evening School of Business was dissolved. University College assumed responsibility for evening business classes, in cooperation with the day College of Business Administration.
