Historical Note

The Executive Committee of Northeastern University's Day Colleges was made up of the dean of each school (Business Administration, Education, Engineering, and Liberal Arts), the Dean of Students, the Dean of Freshmen, and beginning in 1957, the Dean of Women. Along with these administrators, a variety of department chairmen and professors all served on the committee. Harold W. Melvin, Dean of Students, served as the Chairman from 1952 to 1958, when Gilbert G. MacDonald, previous Dean of Freshmen, took over. The Executive Committee oversaw all petitions, student infractions, and academic issues of the four colleges. The Day Colleges and the Evening Programs reported to separate directors who reported to the President. These entities merged in 1961, eliminating the need for a specific Day Colleges Executive Committee.
